You've likely heard about the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity and carat weight), but there's a fifth factor that's arguably just as important: the laboratory report that verifies these qualities. Learn more about the 4Cs at The 4Cs: Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Explained .
In the world of diamond grading, two names dominate: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI). Choosing a diamond certified by one of these internationally recognised labs gives you confidence in your purchase.
But what sets these two authorities apart? Let's explore their histories, specialties and key differences for today's engagement ring buyers.
Which Certifier Suits Your Gemstone?
Follow our decision tree to see which certifier may be most suitable for your chosen gemstone and engagement ring.
That said, whichever lab you choose, both GIA and IGI operate to professional standards with rigorous grading methods, giving you the peace of mind and confidence you need when selecting your gemstone.
Certification methodology and grading continue to change. Please note that any changes by GIA or IGI from 1 October 2025 are not reflected in this guide.
GIA: Gemological Institute of America
GIA holds a prestigious position as the creator of the universally recognised 4Cs system. Since GIA invented the science of grading diamonds, their reports are known throughout the world and carry a global reputation.
The first GIA diamond grading reports were issued in 1955. The clarity and colour grades detailed in their reports are based on a comprehensive system GIA developed in 1952.
GIA: Current & Historical Lab-Grown Diamond Grading Systems explores the evolution of GIA's grading systems for lab-grown diamonds.

IGI: International Gemological Institute
IGI, founded in Antwerp in 1975, positions itself as one of the world's largest independent certification and accreditation service providers.
One of IGI's most notable contributions to the modern jewellery market is its role in the booming lab-grown diamond sector. IGI is recognised as the world's first gemological institute to grade lab-grown diamonds.
In May 2024, IGI introduced "Light Performance" Grading Reports for round brilliant cut diamonds with exceptional optical qualities. The IGI Light Performance grading system calculates values for each diamond to provide a primary score, indicating the overall strength of Light Performance, along with sub-component scores for Brightness, Fire, and Contrast.
IGI's "Hearts & Arrows" Report certifies diamonds cut so precisely that their facet reflections overlap when viewed in a reflective scope, with reflections resembling a pattern of "hearts" seen face-down and "arrows" face-up. Hearts & Arrows precision is typically associated with Excellent-Ideal cuts of superior quality.
